Enjoying a two-week stay in Florida and actually have time to myself this weekend. Here alone for business but trying to do as much exploring as possible! Staying in a vacation rental unit, Waterscape, in Fort Walton Beach which is the small town right next to Destin. I think vacation rentals are a great concept. I have a kitchen, living room, bedroom and two bathrooms. No daily housekeeping but I am a fairly clean person and I love having a laundry machine right in the unit. It seems like the perfect way to travel with a family because you have a kitchen and can make some meals here and save a little money. Even as a business traveler, I appreciate the extra space.
Everyone I’ve met has been friendly. Took an afternoon drive out to Seaside on Friday. For those who have seen The Truman Show, this town will look very familiar because the movie was filmed in the town. Lots of very cute shops and the best book store I’ve ever visited – Sun Dog. Mid-size shop that just seems to have the most interesting and relevant selection to choose from in every category. I’ve been twice and can’t get out the door without spending a $100. Great card selection too! There were places to eat that I would like to try but didn’t have the time yet. I’m always searching for a delicious grouper sandwich– best so far has been at the Market Cafe off of 30A near Seaside. Looks like an unassuming small general store but in the back they have a small, very casual eatery with an awesome grouper sandwich.
Found a great little place to get a pedicure and later learned it was voted #1 nail salon in Destin. Try 4 Seasons Nails, near Home Depot off Rt 98. Nice atmosphere and friendly technicians. Standard pedicure was $35.
Looking for a good bite to eat? Here are my suggestions so far:
- Cuvee Bistro: great appetizers and a lively bar for those looking to mingle
- Tommy Bahama Cafe: very nice atmosphere and delicious food – try the Coconut Cloud Martini and the Old San Juan Shrimp & Scallops
- Donut Hole: amazing donuts, enough said
- Old Bay Steamers in nearby Fort Walton Beach: looks very plain from the outside but the stuffed mushrooms, gumbo and seafood medley were great
